QOL in Elderly survivors of ICU

The Quality of Life study in elderly survivors of ICU is a research program that was initiated by Dr David Blythe at Fremantle Hospital in Perth.  The research program involves five phases:

  • Phase 1 is a systematic review of the literature along with a publication of retrospective data on outcomes in association with the Adult Patient Database figures;
  • Phase 2 is a small study in three centres with the aim of collecting enough data to validate a QOL instrument in a population of elderly ICU patients;
  • Phase 3 is a prospective observational study gathering standard outcomes, QOL and costing data in a larger cohort of critically ill elderly patients involving multiple centres in Australia and New Zealand;
  • Phases 4 and 5 involve the development of a predictive model and an economic analysis.
